Beginning in the 1800s, the British government appointed viceroys in India to represent the interests of the crown.

Viceroys were originally called Governor general, however, after the mutiny of 1857 (India's first war of independence) governor generals were made viceroys.

The first Governor general of india was Warren Hastings. During his period in office, he brought the dual government of Bengal to an end. Following his tenure, Lord Cornwallis was named Governor general and introduced police reforms.

In 1857, Lord Canning was the first Governor general made viceroy after the 1857 mutiny. The last viceroy of British India was Lord Mountbatten and he was also the first governor general of free India.
