⦁ Two point charges of values ‘q’ and ‘2q’ are kept at a distance ‘d’ apart from each other in air. A third charge ‘Q’ is to be kept along the same line in such a way that the net force acting on 'q' and ‘2q’ is zero. Calculate the position of charge ‘Q’ in terms ‘q’ and ‘d’.

EXPLANATION.

  • GIVEN

Two point charge = q and 2q

kept in a distance = d

A third charge Q is to be kept along the same

line in which charge q and 2q is in equilibrium.

CALCULATE THE POSITION OF CHARGE Q IN TERMS OF q and d.

according to the question,

Force acting on Q due to q = kqQ / x^2

Force acting on Q due to 2q = k2qQ / (d - x) ^2

F1 = F2

kqQ / x^2 = k 2qQ / ( d - x) ^2

Cancel q, Q, k

Therefore, equation will be written as,

( d - x / x) ^2 = 2

d - x / x = √2

d = √2x + x

d = x ( √2 + 1 )

x = d / √2 + 1

Therefore,

charge is placed towards small charge q
