What was problematic about the 1876 presidential election? One of Grant’s staff members ran for president, even though he’d been accused of taking bribes. Tilden won the popular vote, Hayes narrowly won the electoral vote, and votes in four states were disputed. The Republican Party was divided between Grant’s followers and the Liberal Republicans. Hayes won the popular vote, Tilden narrowly won the electoral vote, and Florida’s voting results were disputed.

The 1876 elections were quite problematic because Tilden won the popular vote, Hayes narrowly won the electoral vote, and votes in four states were disputed.

In the 1876 Presidential election:

  • Samuel J. Tilden of the Democratic Party won the popular vote
  • Electoral votes in Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Oregon, were disputed

In order to resolve the crisis, Rutherford B. Hayes, the Republican candidate, struck a deal with the Democrats that saw him get the electoral votes from the four disputed states.

This deal was known as the Compromise of 1877 and saw the Republicans removing objection to the ending of the Reconstruction Era.

In conclusion, the election of 1876 was quite problematic as both parties were locked in conflict over who won but this was eventually resolved through a back deal known as the Compromise of 1877.
