Answer:

1. Imperialism

2. Militarism

3. The alliance system

4. Nationalism

The acronym MAIN is often used to summarize these causes of WWI.

Imperialism is the most important because for many decades before World War I, the major European powers competed for overseas territories. This rivalry sometimes threatened to erupt into armed conflict. Next is militarism because throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, militarism was common in Europe, especially in Germany and Britain. Many countries spent large sums of money to build their armies and acquire military equipment. The third in line is the alliance system and the reason I know is because many countries signed agreements that they would help each other fight when the time arose, or they verified their neutrality. The least important is nationalism because although nationalism united people in a region together and created nation-states, it also created tensions and rivalries between countries. One rivalry was between Germany and France. These weren't so important as imperialism of course, because tension is not quite as serious as competing with other countries for overseas territories.
