All foods taken in by animals can be divided into six classes which include:
- Carbohydrates,
- Proteins,
- Fats and oil,
- mineral salts,
- vitamins, and
- Water.
Carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oil makes up the primary food substances.
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body use.
Fats and oil are the lowest source of energy but are energy efficient.
Proteins are the main body building substances which is necessary for building new cells. However,they can be used for energy purposes when the body is not getting enough energy from carbohydrate and fats.
Water is not part of the primary food substances. It serves as the medium in which chemical reactions takes place in the body.
Therefore, water is not a source of energy.
