Summary of the book i have lived a thousand years

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
In "A Thousand Years of Guessing," the author states, "Among the men and women listening around the fire, there must have been a monk who knew how to write, and he decided to put the riddles into a book." Why does the author make this inference?
A. There are written records discussing how monks were always present at a fire in England.
