Alternative technologies for a climate change resilient India
If the climate is to save in India and elsewhere in the world, alternative technologies will have to be used. Technology can give solutions to the environmental and climatic issues in India. First of all let’s see what climate issues India is facing.
The main climatic issues faced by India are floods during the monsoons and extreme heat during the peak summer. Floods occur due to large scale deforestation; and extreme heat is also due to deforestation and abnormal and high emissions of fossil fuel gases.
Apart from restoring the forest covers in the affected areas and regions, technology can help India tackle the challenges. In order to handle flood situations, the country must have a potent and reliable early warning system. Secondly, the engineers must develop excess water supply management techniques such as diverting the flood to canals or channels to areas where water scarcity is more. The flood water supply will definitely benefit such areas as have water scarcity.
In order to handle emissions, India must use alternative energy resources. In a country like India, if this abundant amount of sunlight available is harnessed properly it will be infinitely advantageous to the nation in many ways. India is in the sunny zone of the world. The country receives solar energy equivalent to more than 5000 trillion KWH per year, which is far more than its total annual energy consumption. Besides, no other energy source is as renewable and clean as the solar energy is. Taking both environmental and economic cost, solar energy works cheaper than fossil fuel resources. Tapping and using this abundant solar energy will not only solve the country’s energy demand, but also bring down dangerous levels of air pollution in the country.
Each household, where the sun beats mercilessly during the summer, should have its own solar energy generation plant.
Thirdly, India must start using solar-powered vehicles. The first thing the Government must do is set up smart-vehicle production factory. Once the emissions are controlled, the climatic balance will be regained.
Most of the cities, towns and villages should also be made smart wherein the emissions are minimal. In creating smart cities, towns, and villages, technology again will play a key role.
So, in conclusion it can be said that alternative technologies can provide solutions to climatic issues in India.
