PH is measure of H+ ions present in any solution. It tell you how acidic your solution is. The more H+ ions less will be your pH.
pOH is measure of OH- ions present in any solution. It tell you how basic your solution is. The more OH- ions less will be your pOH.
You need to know the self-ionization constant of water.
2H2O ⇌ H3O+ + OH−
The activity of water can be taken to be 1.
[H3O+][OH−]=Kw
so the relation between pH and pOH is
pH+pOH=pKw
as
pH=−log[H3O+]
pOH=−log[OH−]
pKw=−logKw
pKw depends on temperature and pressure. It is about 14 at 25 °C and 1 bar. It is closer to 12 at 100 °C (so the pH of pure water at that temperature is close to 6).
p(H)+p(OH) = 14 .
