Education, is vital component that continues to be in demand through the generations. However the technique of imparting education has changed from time to time. In the olden days, not many were educated and the few who were blessed with this skill used it for their own and their family's betterment. However today education is freely accessible to all and thereby the needs of man has also increased.

One of the significant difference between education of the past and the present is that education in the olden days were derived from religion and it was imparted for religious purposes. However, studies associated with religion do continue today but that does not make up a major part of education. In the Indian culture, the educational system demanded that the students stay under the guidance of the gurus and spent time with him, observing them closely and also serving them. However, this methodology of learning is restricted today and the student has a choice to make on the subject of learning and the mode for it. In the olden days, education covered a major study covering one's entire practical life and thereby equipped the students for life. However today there is a detailed study on a particular aspect. One of the significant features of learning of the olden times is the relationship between the teacher and the student and the respect that arose between them. This is a missing link in the education of today.

Thus differences as well as similarities exist in the educational system of the past and the present. The most important feature is that the purpose of education is to enlighten and empower the learner - both in the past as well in the present.
