Why should electrostatic field be zero inside a conductor

In a conductor, all the charges reside on the surface of the conductor due to which there is no charge left inside ,due to which an electrostatic field can be produced. Also ,if the charge residing on the surface is negative, then the electric field produced inside ,cancel each other and no electric field is present inside the conductor.
