Velocity of sound waves in air is 330 m/s. For a particular sound wave in air, a path difference of 40 cm is equivalent to phase difference of 1.6p. The frequency of this wave is(a) 165 Hz(b) 150 Hz(c) 660 Hz(d) 330 Hz

Given :

Velocity of sound waves in air = 330 m/s

Path difference = 40 cm = 0.4 m

Phase difference = 1.6π

To find :

The frequency of this wave

Solution :

We know that, relation between phase difference and path difference is

∆Φ = (2π/λ) ∆x

Putting values of ∆Φ and ∆x, we get

1.6π = (2π/λ) × 0.4

2 = 1 / λ

λ = 0.5

Also, we know that

v = f×λ

•°• f = v / λ

f = 330 / 0.5

f = 660 Hz
