The first three steps of completing the square to solve the quadratic equation x^2 + 4x - 6 = 0, are shown below.

step 1: x^2 + 4x = 6
step 2: x^2 + 4x + 4 = 6 + 4
step 3: (x + 2)^2 = 10
step 4: x + 2 = +/-sqrt(10)
step 5: x = sqrt(10) - 2, or x = -sqrt(10) - 2

so the steps are in order.
