How many times can you subtract 10 from 100
Answered by admin @
Answer:
There are two answers to this question, and which ever one is right is based upon your logic in the situation.
ANSWER ONE-INFINITE TIMES
You can subtract 10 from 100 an infinite number of times. Try it! Only, this sometimes makes no sense in the real world. Negative numbers are not applicable in some situations (You can’t have negative money). This would be pure subtraction, just keep on going until you feel like stopping.
ANSWER TWO- TEN TIMES
This answer is the more division minded question. This is where you keep on subtracting until you reach zero. In that case, the subtraction becomes more like division (A topic I’d like to discuss someday…) You see, 100–10 = 90, 90–10=80, and so on and so forth until 0 is reached. If you were to count the number of times that you subtracted 10 to get to Zero, you would get 10 times. This is basically the same as dividing 100 by 10(100 / 10= 10). This is because subtraction and division are linked by funamental properties they share (More on that another time.
So the answer is one of these two. Pick which one applies to the situation, and use it.
Step-by-step explanation:
Linguistics impact the answer to this question. The interpretation of the words of the question could lead to two answers. (Please note that the following illustrations assume a base 10 numbering system.)
Illustration 1
As Illustration 1 demonstrates, one could reasonably argue that it is possible to subtract it an infinite amount of times. However, the question could be interpreted another way as shown in the following:
Illustration 2
In that case, the answer would be 1 time because after the first subtraction, the remainder would no longer be 100. It would be 90. But the original question is insufficiently specific to eliminate something like this:
Illustration 3
As demonstrated by Illustration 3, the answer would once again be an infinite amount of times.
That having been said, if asked a question like this on an exam, I would be prone to interpret it in its simplest form (Illustration 2). If it was a multiple-choice test and “1” was an available selection, I would choose that.
I suppose that there is one other possible answer. They original question states:
How many times can you subtract 10 from 100?
I was taught to try to avoid using the word “you” in written communication unless it is being used to describe an identifiable person or group of people. For example, if someone said to me: “I’m talking to you. Do you understand me?” It would be clear who “you” is. In those two sentences, “you” would be me.
In the original question “you” is being used differently, as a substitute for the word “anybody, anyone, somebody, or someone.” It would be more accurate to ask, “How many times can someone subtract 10 from 100?” Even though that wording is more accurate, it’s a bit clumsy for vernacular English in spoken form. Instead, I try to substitute the word “one” for “you” whenever possible. For example:
How does one go about earning a Master’s degree?
Unfortunately, the original question involves math so substituting “one” for “you” does not work well as demonstrated here:
How many times can one subtract 10 from 100?
Regardless as to whether one uses the word “you, someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, or one,” he or she still runs into a linguistic problem because the answer is contingent upon whom “you, someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, or one” specifically is. If the person reading the question did not know basic subtraction (or addition), the answer could easily be:
Zero times.
Why? Because he or she does not understand the concept, he or she is able to perform the calculation exactly zero times.
Possibly, a better way to ask the question would be:
How many times can 10 be subtracted from 100?
Regardless to how the question is asked, that does not change the two possible answers:
A. 1 time
B. An infinite number of times.
