A solution containing 10g per dm3 of urea

Asked by admin @ in Math viewed by 242 People

A solution containing 10g per dm3 of urea (molecular mass = 60 g mol-1) is isotonic with a 5% solution of a non-volatile solute. The molecular mass of this non-volatile solute is:

Answered by admin @

Before solving this question, I would like to briefly nform you that Isotonic means that the solution has equal concentration hence molarity.

Molarity of urea= mass in g/dm3 /relative molecular mass

10/60= 0.167M

therefore the concentration of non-volatile solute is also 0.167M

but to calculate molecular mass use the formula;

molecular mass= mass/moles

                         = 10/0.167

                         = 59.9 g mol-1
