In the mid-1800s, Democrats believed that a policy of Manifest Destiny would prevent a war with nations that claimed territory in North America. was less important than developing existing territory in the United States. would boost the American economy and open up economic opportunities. would prevent hostilities with American Indian tribes that lived in the West.

Manifest Destiny was the belief that God had sanction or blessed the US to expand their borders.

Democrats, mostly found in the South, believed that gaining more land was important to expanding the US economy. This was most true for plantation owners who needed large amounts of land to continue expanding their cash crop economy. Democrats pushed for land expansion to the west to get more land and even more resources. Manifest Destiny helped the US to gain the southwest from Mexico and the northwest negotiated from Great Britain.
