The river in India known as the open sewer is River Yamuna. It is the second largest tributary of river Ganges, Yamuna is called as the sewer because it is contaminated with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) values ranging from 14 to 28 mg/l and high coliform content.
There are three main sources of pollution in the river, which are household and municipal disposal sites, soil erosion resulting from deforestation and chemical wash-off of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides from the industrial sites..
