1) Convection currents in the magma drive plate tectonics. Heat generated from the radioactive decay of elements deep in the interior of the Earth creates magma (molten rock) in the aesthenosphere. The aesthenosphere (70 ~ 250 km) is part of the mantle, the middle sphere of the Earththat extends to 2900 km.
2) The plates on the Earth's surface would be floating on top of the water. ...Convection currents in the liquid mantle cause the plates to move. At the top of the mantle, the rock encounters the thin crust, and, as it pushes it aside, lava flows out from the mantle to form new oceanic crust.
