Ringing in the ears, also known as tinnitus, can be a sign of many things. I’m not sure if it is indicative of brain damage, but it is something that shouldn’t be ignored. The best type of doctor to see would be a Neurotologist. They are ear-nose-throat doctors with additional training/certification in regards to neurological conditions.
Tinnitus can be extremely difficult to live with, even if there is no other health condition underlying. There is as of now, no medical or surgical treatment for it, other than benzodiazepines. Drugs like Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, and Ativan do not actually decrease the tinnitus, but they do make it less bothersome, as it can be almost unbearable to deal with.
You were wise to ask this question, because it could be indicative of an underlying neurological condition. Also, it can contribute to loss of balance, which can lead to falls that can cause brain damage. Only a Medical Doctor with training in this area, after doing the proper testing, can tell you exactly what is going on. But it something you should get checked out as soon as possible.
I live with tinnitus 24/7. The buzzing, ringing, and hissing in my right you’re never stops. I also have about 50% hearing loss in that year, and have had eight surgeries to reconstruct the eardrum and remove cholesteatoma. The only thing that can be done is for me to take clonazepam. People have actually committed suicide due to the severity of tinnitus. Things like water running, fans blowing, and music playing through small speakers can be as painful as somebody stabbing me in the head with a knife repeatedly.
