ANSWER....
Acids in water solution dissociates H+ ions. Let us consider the reaction between water and HCl in presence of water produce H+ ions. This ion cannot exist alone and hence combines with water molecules and form (H3O)+, the reaction is as follows: -
HCl + H2O ➡(H3O)+ + Cl-
As there is an increase in the protons in the aqueous solution, the solution is acidic in nature.
SIMILARLY,
When base dissolves in water solution produces OH- ion. Let us consider the reaction between water and sodium hydroxide. NaOH in presence of water produce OH- ion. The reaction is as follows: -
NaOH + H2O ➡ Na+ + OH- + H2O
As there is an increase in the hydroxide ions in the solution, the solution is basic in nature.
