Natural sources of iodine :- Due ti it's reactivity iodine is not found in nature in free State . it's main sources are (1) sea weeds (2) Chile salt pater , (3) Natural brine
Extraction of iodine from sea weeds :- Sea weeds lamineria contains iodine sea weed is well dried and and burnt in deep puts carefully so that iodine do not get destroyed . The obtained ash is called kelp which contains 0.4 to 1.3% iodine kelp is dissolved in water and solution is partially crystallised when less. soluble kI and NaI remain in mother liquor , conc H2SO4 is added when basic sulphides desposisistet the bottom , when is filtered and removed , now the filtrate is mixed with MnO2 and H2SO4 and heated iron vessels . iodine vapiroses due to Reaction and collected ALudel .iodine is new collected as solid after condensation ..
2NaI + MnO2 +3H2SO4 -------->2NaHSO4+2H2O + I2
iodine obtained by this method contains CL2 and Br2 as impurifies. It is treated with KI to obtained pure iodine
2KI + CL2 ------Heat---->2KCL + I2 , Br2+2KI ---∆---> 2KBR + I2
