Calculate the pH of the solution produced when an aqueous solution of pH = 5 is mixed with equal volume of an aqueous solution of pH = 3.

In order to calculate the pH when two different solutions are mixed, we need to add the individual moles of X Plus and divide by the total volume of the two solutions previous in this question it is not possible to take the average pH of both the solutions because pH is not additive for example adding two solutions of water each having a pH of 7 will always result in a pH of 7 only. Calculations are as follows

,

$Concentration [H^+] = \frac{10^{-5}V +10^{-3}V}{V+V}$

= $\frac{1.01\times 10^-3}{2}$

$pH=-log(\frac{1.01\times 10^-3}{2}) =3.3$
