A solution of a substance ‘X’ is used for white washing.

(i) Name the substance ‘X’ and write its formula.
(ii) Write the reaction of the substance ‘X’ named in (i) above with water.

Answer: (i) Calcium Oxide and formula is $CaO$

(ii) $CaO(s)+H_2O(l)\rightarrow Ca(OH)_2(aq)$

Explanation: $CaO$ or quicklime is used for whitewashing because when quick lime reacts with water , it forms calcium hydroxide which absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and thus form calcium carbonate $CaCO_3$ which forms a hard coating on walls.

$CaO(s)+H_2O(l)\rightarrow Ca(OH)_2(aq)$

$Ca(OH)_2+CO_2\rightarrow CaCO_3+H_2O$

When quick lime reacts with water it forms slaked lime or calcium hydroxide $(Ca(OH)_2)$

$CaO(s)+H_2O(l)\rightarrow Ca(OH)_2(aq)$
