Mendeleev arranged 63 elements known at that time in order of increasing atomic masses. Whenever a particular element did not fit in the arrangement, he left a gap in the periodic table. Position of hydrogen :
Electronic configuration of hydrogen resembles that of alkali metal. On the other hand, like halogen it also exist as diatomic molecules. So no fixed position was give to hydrogen.

Isotopes were discovered long after Mendeleev proposed periodic classification of elements.
Anomalous position of some elements:
Although the elements are arranged in terms order of increasing atomic masses, but in some cases, the element with higher atomic mass precedes element with lower atomic mass.
