Identify the most important buffer system in blood plasma from the following:

a. bicarbonate buffer
b. phosphate buffer
c. protein buffer
d. hemoglobin buffer

Answered by admin @

Haemoglobin buffer is the most important buffer system in the blood plasma.

Inside the lungs the formation of oxy-haemoglobin from reduced haemoglobin gives out hydrogen ions that react with bicarbonate to form carbonic acid.

The CO2 in the lung shifts to the equilibrium towards the production of CO2 that is continually eliminated in the expired air.

The blood buffers consist of the plasma haemoglobin, oxy-haemoglobin, bicarbonates, proteins and inorganic phosphates.
