Structural and functional unit of a muscle fiber is Sarcomere.
- A sarcomere is defined as the segment between two adjacent Z-lines.
- Surrounding the Z-line there is I-band (for isotropic).
- I-band is made of thin filaments which is not superimposed by tmyosin.
- Following the I-band is the A-band (for anisotropic).
- The Anisotropic band contains both thick and thin filaments.
- Within the A-band is a paler region called the H-zone . For the lighter appearance under a polarization microscope this type of name is given.
- H-band is the part of the thick filaments which does not consist of actin.
