I'd say the answer is either proof or evidence.

Everything in science relies on proof. In history and arts, things don't work like that because there are not things to proof, there are no theories nor hypothesis.

If the answer turns out to be evidence, I won't be surprised because you need a base from where to formulate your ideas.
