Global warming refers to the gradual rise in the temperature of the earth. It is due to the increase in the green house gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and others which trap the sun's heat in the atmosphere and increase the temperature causing the green house effect.
Global warming has numerous effects. A few of them have been listen below-
(1) It causes the change in the climate showing extreme weather conditions due to increase in the average temperature.
(2) It results in a higher rate of extinction of animals and causing disturbance in the ecosystem.
(3) It causes the melting of the ice caps resulting in decrease in the size of the ice caps. Arctic sea ice decline is the result of it showing increase in the sea level.
Thus, global warming results in the decrease in the size of the polar ice caps.
